Professor Shah’s response explored an entirely different mechanism.

Together with his team, he helped develop a device using ultraviolet light to treat serious ocular infections. The resulting technology delivers treatment in approximately five seconds, using a physical mechanism rather than a chemical antimicrobial.

Engineers designed the device to work against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, while avoiding the antimicrobial-resistance mechanism associated with conventional antimicrobial drugs.

The journey from concept to launch took more than a decade.

Photon Therapeutics launched the device for veterinary use in September 2025, deploying it across species including seals, owls, meerkats, horses, and dogs. Its veterinary reach has extended across 18 countries, while human safety trials are now underway.

For Professor Shah, the technology represents more than an invention. It represents the possibility of changing how serious eye infections are treated.

From Eye Drops to a New Approach to Drug Delivery

The third venture, Max Biotech Ltd, grew from another deceptively simple clinical question: how could eye drops become more effective?

The answer led to research into a new way of handling oil and water at the molecular level.

In conventional formulations, oil and water tend to separate—much like a vinaigrette. Max Biotech’s particle technology creates a clear, uniform solution instead.

What began as an investigation into dry-eye treatment has developed into a broader drug-delivery platform with applications beyond ophthalmology.

One of the most ambitious applications currently explored involves insulin delivered through a buccal spray.

Testing has already demonstrated blood insulin concentrations comparable to injection-level delivery. The company now works to progress the technology further, with dry-eye products representing the nearer-term commercial opportunity and insulin delivery forming part of the longer-term vision.

It stands as a striking example of how a problem in one area of medicine can lead to a platform with possibilities far beyond its original purpose.

At Midland Eye, Professor Shah learned the importance of leading from the front. Transforming a founder-led practice into a larger organisation required more than clinical expertise. Photon Therapeutics taught him another lesson: relationships are infrastructure.

At Max Biotech, the lesson hit close to home.

The company’s co-founder passed away at a young age from cancer. Continuing the venture after such a loss was not simply a strategic decision; it became a commitment to carry forward the vision they had shared.
